Andaman Trip

Andaman Trip: Andaman is a natural wonder. Tourists and travelers alike will enjoy this archipelago’s many attractions. The Andaman Islands include some of the nicest beaches, most undeveloped nature paths, and breathtaking sunsets. The area also has a fascinating history, and all of these factors convinced us to arrange a vacation to the Andaman Islands.

We had always preferred to go to the mountains. So the water and beaches in Andaman were quite fresh and gorgeous for us. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

Andaman

About Andaman & Nicobar Island

The 572 islands of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Only roughly 38 of the 572 islands are inhabited. A 150-kilometer-wide waterway known as the Ten Degree Channel separates the Andaman and Nicobar groups.

There are 325 islands in the Andaman group, but just 24 in the Nicobar group. The Great Andaman is made up of the north, middle, and south Andaman islands. In the south, the Ten Degree Channel separates Landfall Island, Interview Island, the Sentinel Islands, Ritchie’s Archipelago, Rutland Island, and Little Andaman from the Nicobar group of islands. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

Car Nicobar is located in the north, Camorta, Katchall, and Nancowry are located in the middle, and Great Nicobar is located in the south.

Surprisingly, Andaman Island is closer to Myanmar (190 km) and Indonesia’s Sumatra (150 km) than it is to India’s mainland (almost 1200 km).

The islands are mostly undiscovered due to their remoteness and lack of accessibility from the mainland. And it is there where the beauty of the area may be found. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

History of Andaman

Normally, we research a location’s history before visiting it. It allows us to have a deeper understanding of the location and individuals. The vacation to the Andaman Islands was no exception. I discovered several intriguing information when researching the history of the location.

Everyone knows that Andaman was a British prison camp during the colonial era, but the site appears to contain historical documentation dating back further than that.

It is unknown when the first people of these collection of islands arrived. Andaman is thought to have had a population of over 30,000 years ago. The earliest evidence comes from 2,200 years ago.

King Rajendra Chola I of the Chola Dynasty was the first to settle these islands and establish a naval base to undertake operations against the Sriwijaya Empire of Indonesia between 1014 and 1042 AD.

The islands were then taken over by the Danish East India Company, who held them until 1868. Finally, in 1869, the British East India Company bought these islands and established a prison camp there.

Top Places to visit in Andaman Trip

During our Andaman journey, we discovered that the island is a treat for both traditional visitors and backpackers. There is a vast list of locations to see in Andaman, but they are all well worth your time. We’ll start with the more traditional locations and then move on to the more unusual ones.

1. Port Blair

The capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is Port Blair. It is also the largest town and the point of entry for all of the other islands. So, most likely, your journey will begin here.

The town’s attractions include the Cellular Jail, the Samudrika Marine Museum, and a water sports facility, among others. You may also go to Corbyn’s Cove Beach if you want to go to the beach. You can also enjoy water sports here.

Things to do in Port Blair

  1. Visit the Cellular Jail to learn more about the struggle of the freedom fighters who were sentenced to this penal settlement. In the evening, don’t miss the light and sound spectacular. Through a light and sound performance, it depicts the tale of India’s liberation warriors and how India gained independence.
  2. Enjoy water activities at the Samudrika marine museum and water sports facility.
  3. To get a feel for the beach, go to Corbyn’s Cove.

Day Trips from Port Blair

You may go on a variety of day trips from Port Blair, each one unique in its own way. You can accomplish all of them if you have enough time; otherwise, select according to your preferences.

Chidiya Tapu

Chidiya Tapu is located around 30 kilometres from Port Blair and is known for beautiful sunsets and bird viewing. A day excursion from Port Blair to Chidiya Tapu is possible. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

Wandoor Beach and Jolly Buoy Island

These two locations may also be visited in a single day from Port Blair. Mahatma Gandhi National Park includes Jolly Buoy Island, which is known for its crystal blue water and underwater coral reefs. Boats to Jolly Buoy depart from Wandoor at 9:00 a.m. and return at 3:00 p.m. So, if you want to ride to Jolly Buoy, make sure you get to Wandoor before 9 a.m.

Chatham Saw Mill

The Chatham Saw Mill is Asia’s oldest and biggest sawmill. However, this isn’t the only incentive to pay a visit to the sawmill. The mill’s history dates back to 1789, when Lt. Archibald Blair arrived at Port Blair to establish a British town, primarily as a deportation centre for prisoners. Previously, the sawmill was utilised to meet the demands of the west.

Mill Timings: 8.00 AM to 2.30 PM except for Mondays and Thursdays.

North Bay Island

Day excursions to North Bay Island and Ross Island are available. Water activities are popular on North Bay Island. Scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, sea walks, and speed boat rides are all available here. A one-hour boat trip from Port Blair Jetty takes you to the island. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

2. Ross Island (Netaji Subhash Chandra Dweep)

Another spot that will take your breath away is Ross Island. Until 1941, when an earthquake demolished the island, it was the former capital of Andaman. For over 80 years, Ross Island served as the headquarters of the Indian Penal Settlement.

Markets, bakeries, stores, workshops, a water distillation plant, a chapel, a tennis court, a printing press, a secretariat, a hospital, a cemetery, and an open-air theatre were among the amenities on the island. Except for certain old crumbling structures that formerly held some of these sites, everything has vanished now. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

North Bay Island and Ross Island tours are usually combined in one day.

3. Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

Havelock Island is the most popular island in the Andamans, with the most visitor traffic. It will be a highlight of your journey. Havelock has some of the greatest diving spots in South Asia, as well as lovely and clean beaches.

Radhanagar Beach is regarded as one of Asia’s most beautiful beaches. You may tour the island by renting a motorcycle or scooty, like we did. We recommend staying on Havelock Island for at least two nights. Havelock Island is a backpacker’s paradise.

Symphony Palms Beach 1

Things to do in Havelock Island

  1. Visit Havelock Island’s lovely beaches and have a fantastic time. Visit the sunset at Radhanagar Beach and the dawn at Kalapathar Beach. Vijaynagar Beach and Govindnagar Beach are two other beaches.
  2. Scuba diving is an excellent option. Havelock, as previously said, features some of the top diving spots in South Asia. It is preferable to take a dive from one of the diving schools located near Beaches 3 and 4.
  3. The Elephant Beach is a great place to relax. Havelock Island is roughly a 20-minute boat ride away from Elephant Beach. The location is a winner, with white beaches and stunning coral reefs. Water sports such as snorkelling, sea walks, and glass-bottom boat rides are also available. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

Radhanagar hamlet is also a good starting point for a journey to the Elephant Beach.

4. Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

This lovely island is a backpacker’s dream. The brilliant blue seas and golden sand beaches are a visual delight. Neil Island has a natural bridge in addition to its beautiful beaches. Neil Island, also known as Shaheed Dweep, is a tiny island that may be explored in a day on a two-wheeler. You may rent a motorcycle or scooty here, just like you do in Havelock, and explore the island.

A day excursion to Neil Island or Shaheed Dweep is possible, but staying overnight is strongly advised. Our favourite site on the entire Andaman tour was Neil Island.

Places to visit in Neil Island

Bharatpur Beach, Sitapur Beach, Laxmanpur Beach, and the natural Beach are among Neil’s magnificent beaches.

A diving centre may be found on Bharatpur Beach. Scuba diving, glass bottom boat rides, and snorkelling are all available here.

5. Baratang Island

Between the South and Middle Islands is Baratang Island. Beautiful beaches, mangrove rivers, limestone caverns, and mud volcanoes may all be found here. Baratang Island is around 100 kilometres from Port Blair and takes about 5 hours to get due to poor road conditions. We are not trying to discourage you, but this is a destination to visit only if you enjoy exploring the unknown and are not scared by long hours and difficult travel conditions.

Please keep in mind that visiting the limestone caverns will require a permission. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

Kayaking in Andaman

6. Diglipur and North Andaman

Perhaps the best-kept secret of the Andaman tour is this. North Andaman is a part of the island that has yet to be explored. By road, it takes around 12 hours to get from Port Blair to Diglipur. However, once you arrive, you will be mesmerised by the natural beauty of the area. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

Places to visit in Diglipur

Ross and Smith Island

The islands of Ross and Smith are really two islands connected together by a sand bar to form a single group of islands. During low tide, the sea is very clear, and the sand bar shows. The sand bar disappears during high tide, leaving a water trail between the two islands.

Lamiya Bay Beach: The beach in Lamiya Bay highlights the foothills of the Saddle Peak, North Andaman’s tallest peak.

Mud Volcano at Shyamnagar & Limestone cave at Diglipur: Mud volcanoes may be found at Shyamnagar, North Andaman, much as they are in Baratang. Diglipur’s limestone caverns, also known as Alfred caves, are located near Ramnagar Beach.

Andaman Travel Guide

How to reach Andaman?

Port Blair serves as the entryway to the Andaman Islands. You may get to Port Blair via plane or sea.

By Air: Flights to Andaman are available from all of India’s main cities.

By Ship:If you want to experience life at sea, you may go to Port Blair on a ship that departs from Kolkata, Chennai, or Vishakapatnam. Port Blair is often reached in four days.

Flights are thus the simplest and most convenient mode of transportation to Andaman.

Island Hopping: How to get around on an Andaman Trip?

You can’t avoid island hopping once you’ve arrived in the Andaman. There are two sorts of travels: day trips and overnight journeys.

Islands for Day Trips

These islands are closer to Port Blair and may be visited in a single day. Simply walk over to the Aberdeen Jetty and find an operator to make your reservations. Your hotel may possibly be able to assist you with making reservations. Some of these islands, such as Ross Island, North Bay Island, and the Jolly Buoy Islands, are accessible by day.

Islands for Night Stay

The Phoenix Bay Jetty is the place to go if you want to visit Havelock and Neil Islands. There are both government and private boats available. A government boat cannot be reserved in advance. To reserve your tickets, you must be in line early in the morning. Makruzz is the greatest of the private operators.

We had travelled on government ships as well as Makruzz. Obviously, Makruzz is speedier than its government equivalents, but what I enjoyed about the government boat was that you could wander about freely and admire the boundless blue oceans from the deck.

How to get around within the islands?

Both Havelock and Neil Island offer two-wheeler rentals for exploring the islands. If you’re travelling further distances, you may also hire a cab. To go about, we leased a scooty at both Havelock and Neil Islands.

Some amazing things to do in Andaman

Water Sports in Andaman

The Andaman Islands are a haven for water sports enthusiasts. The archipelago has the greatest underwater sports, thanks to its stunning coral reefs and pristine seas. Scuba diving, snorkelling, and sea walking are all options. North Bay Island is a great area to go for water sports like jet skiing and banana boating. Scuba diving and snorkelling are also available. However, we recommend that you go scuba diving on Havelock Island or Neil Island. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

Scuba Diving in Andaman

Havelock 16

We’ve been saying for a long time that Andaman boasts some of the top diving spots in the country. It’s not without reason, because the stunning coral reefs and aquatic life are just incredible. We recommend Havelock and Neil Island for scuba diving in the Andaman Islands.

If you’re going scuba diving in Havelock, avoid Elephant Beach and instead go to the diving areas between Beach No. 3 and 4. You have a choice of operators from which to choose. In Andaman, we had done Barefoot Scuba. Remember to seek the advice of experienced PADI instructors before scuba diving. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

Where to stay in Andaman?

Andaman provides a wide range of hotel alternatives to suit all budgets. We propose that you spend the night at Port Blair or Havelock Island on your tour to the Andaman Islands. Spend one night at Neil Island if time allows. Both Port Blair and Havelock provide a diverse range of activities. There are fewer possibilities in Diglipur and North Andaman. It’s not a terrible idea to make a reservation ahead of time, Sio.

Camping on the beaches is not permitted in Andaman unless it is arranged with permission of the resorts.

What to eat in Andaman?

It would be a shame not to taste the seafood while visiting the Andaman Islands. Barefoot Bar and Restaurant, Full Moon Café, Black Beard’s Bistro, Red Snapper, and Anju-Coco Resto all serve delicious meals in Havelock. Food options on Neil Island are quite limited.

Is any permit required for Andaman Trip?

In order to visit Andaman, Indian people need not need a permission.

For foreign nationals, a RAP (Restricted Area Permit) is necessary to visit the Andaman Nicobar Islands, which can readily obtained from the Immigration Authorities upon arrival in Port Blair by aeroplane or ship for a period of 30 days, subject to the availability of a valid visa. This can be extended for another 15 days with approval under specific circumstances, and the Superintendent of Police, FRO/CID, Port Blair, has been assigned the ability to do so.

The Restricted Area Permit is also available through Indian embassies abroad, as well as the Foreigners Registration Offices in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, as well as the Immigration Authorities at the airports in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

To encourage tourism in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a campaign was launched recently.

The following 30 islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands do not require RAP for international tourists:

(1) East Island (2) North Andaman (3) Smith Island (4) Curfew Island (5) Stewart Island (6) Landfall Island (7) Aves Island (8) Middle Andaman (9) Long Island (10) Strait Island (11) North Passage (12) Baratang (13) South Andaman (14) Havelock Island or Swaraj Dweep (15) Neil Island or Shaheed Dweep (16) Flat Bay (17) North Sentinel Island (18) Little Andaman (19) Chowra (20) Tillang Chong Island (21) Teressa (22) Katchal (23)Nancowry (24) Kamorta (25) Pulomilo (26) Great Nicobar (27) Little Nicobar(28) Narcondum Island (29) Interview Island and (30) Viper Island (Day visit only).

Both Indians and outsiders are prohibited from entering tribal territory. So, if someone tries to sell you an Andaman trip, say no.

What is the best time to visit Andaman?

Andaman may be visited at any time of year. The island’s finest season, though, is from mid-November to early March. This is considered the finest time to visit the Andaman Islands. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.

Network and wifi

Although cell services are available, the data connection in Andaman is quite weak. The internet and wireless connections are both poor. The mobile network connections on Neil and Havelock Islands were similarly very bad. So relax and enjoy your time away from the internet and WiFi. We were very content to do without these so-called “essentials” for a few days.

ATMs in Andaman

In Port Blair, there are a lot of ATMs. There are a few ATMs in Havelock, too, along Beach No 1 or the Jetty. Both Neil Island and Diglipur have a few of ATMs. When travelling to Neil and Diglipur, it is preferable to have cash on hand.

Is it safe to travel in Andaman?

Yes, Andaman is a very safe place to visit. The island is a very quiet location with few instances of safety concerns. The report of a Christian missionary’s death on North Sentinel Island has been making the rounds recently. Be advised that a few tribal tribes live in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where they have maintained themselves apart from civilisation. They do not take lightly intrusions on their land and lives. As tourists, we would advise you to avoid visiting tribal regions without a guide. Furthermore, both Indians and outsiders are severely prohibited from entering most tribal territories.

Second, bear in mind the safety precautions that apply at sea. Even if you are an excellent swimmer, do not go swimming alone. Also, whether scuba diving or snorkelling, always follow the instructions of your instructor or trainer. Have a wonderful vacation and be safe. Lets know more about Andaman Trip.
