A Trip to Andaman: When we talk of Andaman, we think of dazzling colours of green and blue, miles of white sand beaches backed by deep green woods. I’ve heard for a long time that “after you’ve visited the Andaman, no other Indian beach will amaze you.” So when we were given the choice between Goa and the Andaman Islands for our annual team away, I didn’t hesitate to chose the latter. It didn’t matter that the trip would take two days, the majority of which would be spent travelling. I’ve already booked two getaways for the year.
Add in a few more home-bound flights, and my earned leave quota will be depleted before I can arrange my long-awaited journey to the Bay of Bengal’s gorgeous archipelago. Thankfully, I wasn’t alone, and Andaman came out on top by a large margin! Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
Our 2-Day Andaman Itinerary
Is Andaman a good place to visit for a two-day vacation? Obviously not. The flight from Bangalore to Port Blair takes 2.5 hours. That’s only the beginning. Then, wherever you want to go, you’ll need to go to a jetty and catch a ferry to the island or beach of your choice. But we only had two days. This is a photo gallery from my first visit to this floating paradise. Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
Day 1: Arrival at Havelock Islands
Arrive at Port Blair
Chayan sent me out at the Bangalore Airport around midnight after a typical workday. (On this trip, I really missed my constant travel companion.) We arrived at Port Blair about 9 a.m., in time for our 4:30 a.m. flight. My network fell down the minute I arrived at Port Blair. My phone stayed on aeroplane mode the whole flight till I arrived in Bangalore. Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
It was inconvenient to say the least, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It’s a relief to be free of the news of dirty politics in the run-up to the Delhi elections. Transfer to the jetty for a Havelock Island boat ride.
Havelock’s jetty was around 30 minutes’ drive from the airport. The route provides views of Goa’s interiors. The boat was air-conditioned and well-equipped, but there was no way to appreciate the scenery outside. We did, however, take turns visiting the observation deck and meeting our ship’s skipper. T.S.G. Blue Resort on Havelock Island is a great place to relax and unwind. Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
The T.S.G. Blue resort is less than a kilometre from Radhanagar Beach, Andaman’s most famous beach. The Andaman coconut water, which was served as a welcome drink, was delicious. Without a doubt, the coconuts in Andaman are considerably bigger and sweeter than those found elsewhere in India.
The house isn’t enormous, but it’s tastefully done. It’s not one of those high-end resorts, but the setting is ideal. Elephant Beach, a favourite of adventurers, is also adjacent to this resort. We were re-energized for the woodland trip after a much-needed lunch. Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
A guided trek to Neil’s Cove and the beautiful Radhanagar beach
I’ve been numerous beaches, but the Radhanagar Beach is one of a kind. The beach transitions from rocks to gravels through coral reef to silky smooth white sand over a 2-kilometer span.
After a lengthy travel and a restless night at the airport, I was drained. But the thrill of discovering a new area outweighs everything. We proceeded on a 2-kilometer guided trip into the forests, marvelling at the island’s thriving wildlife. Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
Did you know that forest covers around 86 percent of the area in Andaman? The amazing woodlands of this green paradise are overshadowed by the fascinating photographs of the crystal clear water reflecting the moods of the sky, the white beach, and coral reefs.
We came encountered trees that were over 500 years old on our guided hike. Our guide explained, “These giants are so strong that they couldn’t be chopped with standard tools.” We heard tales of crocodile attacks in the woods, on the shore, and at the beach. The presence of such a lush forest right next the beach is a distinctive feature of Andaman beaches, particularly the Radhanagar Beach.
It was difficult to ignore the sound of blue waves crashing on the gleaming beach all the way across the forest, but I did. Save the best for last, as they say. Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
We eventually made it to the beach after finishing the journey to Neil’s Cove — what a rewarding experience! The snails strolled along the beach, perfectly blending in with the vivid corals. We saw a live army practise as we reached the sand beach. That was an amazing experience.
Just before the magnificent sunset, it was time to satisfy the throat with another serving of the delightful coconut water.
Here are a few more photos from the most picturesque beach I’ve ever visited.
Day 2: Elephant Beach and Cellular Jail
Some of us returned to Radhanagar Beach early the next morning to experience the morning vibes on India’s most gorgeous beach.
We left early in the morning, at 8 a.m., for a quick speedboat journey to Elephant Beach. Elephant beach can only be reached by boat from Havelock Nagri Resort. Elephant Beach is recognised for its adventures, which include snorkelling and a sea walk for beginners and scuba diving for experts only.
If you don’t want to participate in these activities, don’t miss out on the glass-bottom boat trip. We took one with us on our Rameshwaram vacation, but the glass panel was so filthy that we couldn’t see anything beneath. The one in the Andaman Islands is the polar opposite. The enormous glass panel transforms into an aquarium, revealing a glimpse of the world under the waves.
Beginners are not permitted to participate in scuba diving here. Havelock Island is known for its scuba diving. So, whether you’re new to scuba diving or want to brush up on your skills, contact one of Havelock’s many scuba diving centers. They will transport you to the appropriate locations for this activity. Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
We started our journey back to Port Blair after a delicious meal at the Seaside Restaurant with live music. If you’re looking for a unique dining experience in Havelock, I definitely suggest Something Different. It’s a small seaside cafe with delicious meals and live music. Inside, I liked the unusual décor.
We arrived at Port Blair about 5:30 p.m., just in time for sunset. In the middle of the hullabaloo around the ship’s dislodging, I believe I managed to snap a passable photo.
Okay, it’s time for a brief history lesson in this travelogue, as is customary. The Andaman Islands aren’t your average historical destination, with 1000-year-old structures to admire. For a long time, the islands in this area were isolated and undiscovered by the rest of the globe. Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
This is why these islands are home to some of the world’s oldest cultures. The majority of tribal regions are still restricted from visitors in some form or another. The British began settling at Port Blair around the end of the nineteenth century.
This was the time when India’s revolutionary struggle for independence had expanded across the country. To create dread among the populace, they began building of a massive cellular jail on the island. Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
The independence warriors were deported to Andaman for the rest of their lives, with no chance of seeing their families again. The most horrific occurrences in India’s liberation movement have occurred in Port Blair’s cells jail.
During World War II, the Japanese Army attacked and gained control of Port Blair in 1942. Subhash Chandra Bose, one of India’s greatest liberation warriors, paid a visit to the island a year later.
He called the island a free territory even before India achieved independence from British empire in August 1947. The momentous day when he hoisted the Indian national flag, the tricolour, at Port Blair was December 30, 1943.
Today, the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Memorial in Port Blair commemorates that time and place. I liked how this place’s whole approach road is lit up with lamps and beautiful lighting. The purple tones of the sky at night contrasted well with the Tricolor flying aloft.
Visit the Cellular Jail for light and sound show
I could have stayed there for hours, but I had a concert to see. The Andaman Cellular Jail’s Light and Sound performance puts you on an emotional roller coaster trip. Lets know more about A Trip to Andaman.
You’ll be seated in the midst of the Andaman Cellular grounds, surrounded by vacant cells. It’s an old tape featuring some of India’s best actors, including Om Puri. It’s a bit of a throwback, but for first-time visitors to Andaman, it’s a must-do. During the concert, I had tears in my eyes and chills on my arms.
So, there concludes my brief journey. On the first day, several of us went scuba diving and later that evening, we went mangrove kayaking on Havelock Island. I was not one of them. However, if you just have two days, this is definitely the best way to see the Andaman Islands.
